ORIGINS
Wunby began as a distraction for my oldest son, Geoff, as we sat waiting for tire service. There were pieces of corrugated cardboard and some small thin sheet plastic lying about. For entertainment, I used a pocket knife to slice partly though the cardboard in a series of parallel and perpendicular lines, forming a grid. This allowed us to insert the small plastic pieces into the slits, resulting in a fun father-son activity, making and remaking mazes.
At home, we used a table saw to make grooves in a small square wood plank, replacing the cardboard version. The plastic maze walls were replaced with wooden pieces. To make it more interesting, we drilled holes into the center of each square to hold wooden dowels, and painted the dowels and outer squares in matching bright colors.
The game as we now know it was truly born when Geoff made up the rules and named the pieces. A special die with our own symbols was created to support the new rules. The rest of our family pitched in with suggestions along the way. It has been our family game ever since. Now we want to share it with the world.
